This Century-Old Spanish Hacienda Brings European Splendor to the Silicon Valley

In the midst of Silicon Valley's relentless intensity, the European joie de vivre and la dolce vita often appear as unattainable concepts from the faraway continent -  but for two venture capitalists whose children have flown the nest, the endeavor to imbue their Northern California abode with the spirit of European culture emerged as an enticing pursuit. This quest led them to the discovery of a century-old Spanish Hacienda, steeped in history and ripe with potential. With a vision to honor the home's Old World heritage while breathing new life into its aging structure, they enlisted the expertise of acclaimed designer Carolyn Brandwajn of CBespoke.

Drawing inspiration from the clients’ profound affinity for all things European, Brandwajn curated a fusion of past and present, where Old World elegance meets modern sophistication. Stepping into the 5,500 square foot renovated estate feels akin to wandering the grounds of a French chateau or lounging in a Northern Italian villa.

The living room stands as a testament to the home's storied past, boasting hand-hewn beams by E & K Vintage Wood sourced from a barn in upstate New York. A touch of elegance is imbued by the RH chandelier, which casts a warm glow over the plush Coup D’Etat sectional. Further accentuating the room's European ambiance is the original marble fireplace mantel and an antique bookshelf sourced from Italy - with as many stories to tell as the novels on its shelf. Each piece of decor, from the delicate music stand to the graceful bust, transports guests to Europe’s Renaissance era.

Spilling out from the living room, the dining area retains the same wooden beams and ornamental accents, including distinctive wrought iron detailing under the archway - an original feature of the house. The palette of earthy browns blend with the golden sunlight filtering through the windows, enveloping the room in a Mediterranean-esque atmosphere.

But a dining room fulfills its purpose only when complemented by a kitchen - and this residence boasts a culinary space that is a true masterpiece of French style. A grand La Cornue range in Lavande Blue commands attention with its enamel gleaming like a sapphire and brass-trimmed accents adorning the range hood, while twin faucets grace a 5-foot-long Galley sink. The bespoke island lighting, a hallmark of the home's original design, bathes the space in a soft, inviting glow. Every element — from the premium Rabello cabinets to the polished Da Vinci Marble countertop — results in an impressive balance of form and function. In true French fashion, la cuisine est le cœur de la maison - the kitchen is indeed the heart of this home.

Beyond the kitchen, the Owner’s Suite beckons with its Waterworks exposed thermostatic shower system and a luxurious walk-in closet. Meanwhile, the backyard oasis, complete with a pool, offers a tranquil retreat reminiscent of everlasting Mediterranean summers.

Despite its Silicon Valley locale, where time is often a scarce commodity, the European art of slow living thrives within the walls of this home – a sanctuary where life's simple pleasures are to be savored. From the decorative accents that celebrate art, culture, and music to the overall ambiance designed for leisure and recreation, this residence offers a passage across time and space.
